Working From Strength Helps Foster the Feeling of Flow

Online Parent Coach

Resistance: the refusal to accept or comply with something; the attempt to prevent something by action or argument

Flow: the action or fact of moving along in a steady, continuous stream

For many years, I lived with a lot of resistance. It was not until I learned what brought me flow that I was able to gain confidence and click into my true gifts. Something I've noticed is that, too often, the resistance is honored more than the flow. Terms like "I’m struggling through this week", "I'm so broke", "I'm so exhausted" have become sort of badges of honor. I am here to tell you that once I learned to lean into my flow state and where I'm strongest, those limiting phrases have significantly lessened while my confidence grows.

In January 2017 I met with a marketing guru named Sarah. She asked me a series of questions and at the end of the meeting, after sharing some tears and fears with her, she asked me if I had ever taken my StrengthsFinder Test. After replying no, she issued me homework to get that done!

What I learned drastically helped to set me free. Today I want to share with you my Top Five Strengths!

1. Individualization

People who are especially talented in the Individualization theme are intrigued with the unique qualities of each person. They have a gift for figuring out how people who are different can work together productively.

Uh....yes. Something I have a really difficult time with are blanket statements and umbrella terms. These grey areas always open the doors for exceptions for me. In marketing terms, where this gives me resistance is the difficulty in quantifying what results and promises I offer. I flip this into a strength by focusing on the fact that I coach parents to find individual support, the answers that are right for their family.

I do not coaching from the place of “this worked for me, it’s going to work for you” (duh, I’m not a parent). Rather, I coach to help you uncover what works for you, finding solutions your way - not my way. For some parents certain tools truly resonate; for others it’s more difficult. In this way, having Individualization as a strength is just a blessing.

2. Strategic

People who are especially talented in the Strategic theme create alternative ways to proceed. Faced with any given scenario, they can quickly spot the relevant patterns and issues.

This strength comes in handy as I work with children having epic tantrums and meltdowns. I look to these pain points not as something that stresses me out, but more like a problem that needs a solution. Looking for alternative and individual solutions to help give the child support through the difficult moment. I help illuminate the path to get out with the least amount of damage.

I believe there is always a way out. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, and I love helping clients illuminate and brighten that light.

3. Belief

People who are especially talented in the Belief theme have certain core values that are unchanging. Out of these values emerges a defined purpose for their life.

Now, if I'm being completely honest, this strength has gotten me into a bit of trouble in the past. And, as a result, I lost my confidence in speaking up for a while, especially with bosses and authoritarian types. I used to believe that I was the crazy one.

I don't believe children need to be put down, in any capacity, in hopes of having them raise higher. I fully believe in setting strong expectations, routines, and agreements, and then holding true and following through on the natural consequences. I don't find it funny to publicly shame and humiliate people for being different or having a difficult time. And I don't believe that just because someone is younger makes them less of a human.

Learning how to hold true to these beliefs has certainly cost me some friendships and work relationships. But it’s also allowed me to foster deep, meaningful, and long-term relationships that in turn has help shield me from toxicity that can sometimes sneak in.

4. Woo

People who are especially talented in the Woo theme love the challenge of meeting new people and winning them over. They derive satisfaction from breaking the ice and making a connection with another person.

Extroverted to the core. I love people. I love talking to people, listening to people, learning from people. I can not get enough from people. Being around people actually fills my tank and brings me such joy. Especially children.

Man, they are hilarious, open, honest, fresh and love to talk and share as much as I do! When we first met and Jason was getting to know me, he used to comment that my hobby included "people," that's all. Yes, I agree - PEOPLE are my hobby.

Good thing I love people because I meet people from all over the world and am able to quickly connect to them.

5. Developer

People who are especially talented in the Developer theme recognize and cultivate the potential in others. They spot the signs of each small improvement and derive satisfaction from these improvements.

Oh man, reading this strength last always gives me goosebumps. I think this was my most hidden strength. I honestly did not know that not everyone wanted to do this with people. I simply love encouraging, supporting, listening, helping, and building people up.

The way I grew up left me feeling so angry and disconnected. People routinely mistook my lacking confidence as me just not wanting to learn or simply not caring, when in reality I just didn't know HOW! Once I could understand the HOW of something things got easier, and I grew more confident. And, as it turns out, I developed this into one of my strongest strengths. Let's rise people up, not beat them down.

This is why I’m so passionate about helping parents connect and help their children learn how. I don’t want time to be wasted or relationships to be hurt unnecessarily simply because it’s difficult to connect.

There is always a way, and I am here to help you get there.

When I first leapt into this Coaching thing, I felt timid to show up wholly uncertain if this was the right path for me to take. It was scary, uncharted, and so OUT THERE that I wasn't sure it would be the right fit. Learning my Strengths helped me see just how naturally wired I am to do this work. Finding what brings me flow and leaning into my strengths has allowed me to build a kick ass community that is constantly growing and evolving.

I help parents find individual answers to help their family reconnect and thrive. I offer unique tools and support that focus on meeting you where you're at and getting you to where you want to go.
